Zaqhwan Wins Batu Kawan Thrilier

(Batu Kawan, 7 April 2014) The opening round of the 2014 PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship witnessed the start of an exciting new year of racing as Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi secured his first CP130 victory for the season at Stadium Batu Kawan, Penang.

The poleman delighted local motorsports fans to win a three-way tactical contest against Norizman Ismail and CP130 sophomore, Mohd Azhar Abdul Jalil.

At the start of the race Zaqhwan lost the holeshot to Norizman but he quickly recovered ground by overtaking his Harian Metro Y-TEQ SCK Honda Racing rival in the second lap. Once ahead, Zaqhwan maintained a consistent pace and pulled away from the pack, completing the grueling 18-lap race within 16’15.133s.

Norizman took second place with 16’18.735s while Azhar settled in third, 16’21.269s.

“I can’t imagine a better way to start the season. I am really happy and thank you to the team for giving me a perfect bike this weekend,” said Zaqhwan.

“In previous seasons, I could only clock fast laps in the practice session but come the SuperPole and finals, things don’t really work out. This time it’s different because I dominated all the elements,” he added.

Zaqhwan went on to review the race and commented, “The race was extremely tough despite the absence of big names. I had to work really hard to get ahead and the hot weather conditions just made everything worse. Even so, I am really glad to come out on top. I feel motivated to get on the podium in the upcoming rounds.”

Picking up 25 points from this leg, Zaqhwan now leads the CP130 standings followed by Norizman and Azhar with 20 points and 16 points respectively.

In the CP115, Elly Idzlianizar Ilias was force to settle in third place despite starting the race from pole.

The first half of the 15 lap race saw Elly lead the way but his aggressive riding caused his Honda to overheat and both YY Pang riders took advantage of the situation to overtake their M Seki Liberty Honda rival in lap seven and 14th respectively.

“It was really challenging. Elly was exceptionally fast and if not for his technical issue, a win would have been impossible” said Izzat.

Lastly, Khairul Ikhwan Ajis outgunned Mohd Harith Farhan Baharin to take the chequered flag in the WIRA category. The Mos Track Pro completed the 12-lap race within 11’27.157s, 1.434 seconds ahead of Harith (11’28.591s) followed by Khairul Idham Pawi (11’30.663s) third.

Round 2 of the PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship will take place at Muar, Johor this 25 and 26 April.
